Flat Roof Construction Materials and Techniques

Flat roof construction is generally in service on commercial and industrial buildings.  Some residential homes have flat roof construction as well.  Flat roof construction is generally used in building as a cheaper and faster alternative to standard sloped roofing.  There are several types of flat roofing construction details to choose from. Below are some common roof construction techniques.

Timber flat roof construction

Among the types flat roof construction is timber flat roof construction, which is probably the most common sort of flat roof construction that exists.  Flat roofs made of timber are easy to resource for labor and materials, because timber is a very standard construction material.  Timber constructed flat roofs are the easiest and quickest to build, and remember that flat roof construction is usually chosen in an effort to lower material and costs in comparison to sloped roof construction. To save on money, timber roof construction is a great option.

Warm flat roof details and construction

Another type of flat roof is warm flat roof construction.  A warm flat roof is when the insulation is installed above the waterproof membrane.  This type of construction is common in areas with a sever change in climatic conditions.  It is also done when the builder has concerns about the look of the roof from above.  Some warm flat roof details are that they are strong on longevity.  They do, however, require special attention such as installing gravel, slabs, or pebbles to deal with run off.

Warm deck flat roof construction and insulation

Warm deck flat roof construction is a development in flat roofing that allows the structure to be waterproofed more easily and much better insulated than its predecessor; the cold deck flat roof.  With a warm roof, insulation can be applied on both the top and bottom of the structure, producing a much stronger weather barrier than the old standard mineral wool between the timber joists. This a huge advantage when it comes to creating a warm roof construction.

Using the warm roof method, the insulation is installed on the outside of the structure rather than just stuffing mineral wool under the roof.  Foam rigid insulation is installed on both sides of the roof and, with its foil backing, more than doubles the insulation value of the old, cold flat roof construction.  That is why they deciding to call the technique, warm roofing.

Using modern rigid foam insulation also removes the need for a thermal barrier to be installed as part of the roofing system.  Therefore, this technique is not just more energy efficient, but it also reduces costs in the form of materials and time, making it the preferred type of flat roofs construction for builders.
